about

For Troy Davis (on the morning after his execution by the Georgia Department of Corrections for a crime he probably didn’t commit.)
by William Wilson Whittenberg 22.September, 2011 ©2011 wilsongs

lyrics

do we imagine ourselves to be prophets?
are we so wise in our own eyes?
that we could judge with such certainty
black from white and truth from lie?
maybe he was guilty of the crime
cut the innocent down before our eyes
maybe then he does deserve to die, but then so do I.

what then have we all done pity?
where have we our forgiveness hid?
does truth rest only on what I’m thinking,
or on the thing that he really did?
maybe he was guilty of the crime
cut the innocent down before our eyes
maybe then he does deserve to die, but then so do I.

troy are you looking down from heaven?
are you finally free from blame?
do you see justice kissing mercy?
do they see everything the same?
maybe you were guilty of your crime
cut the innocent down before our eyes
maybe you really did deserve to die, but then so did I….

Yeah, I wrote this song as my wife and I heard the story of Troy Davis. I've sung it so much now that I no longer cry when I sing it. Don't know if that's a good thing or not.
